Welcome to this blog, which I created on Nov. 8, 2021 as a way for Bell Islanders near and far who are not members of my Facebook Group "Historic Wabana Nfld 2.0" to continue to see some of the things posted there after the Group went from a "Public" group to "Private."
In this Blog, you will see some of the things that you would see on my FB group if you were a member. You won't be able to comment here in real time like you would on the FB group, but if you want to share your thoughts on anything you see, or even send in your own photos to be included here, you can do so by emailing me (Gail) at: [email protected].
Just as you would see on the FB Group, the latest posts are shown first. Unlike the FB Group, you will see buttons next to some posts. You can click on the button provided to read more about the subject at hand. When you are finished, click the back arrow in the top left corner of the page to return to this Blog.

Message about my Facebook Group (Sept. 14, 2024): I created my first Facebook Group (Historic Wabana Nfld) in 2016. Everything ran smoothly with that original Group until early September 2024, when I was locked out of my FB account for reasons unknown to me. Over the past 11 days, I have made numerous attempts to regain access to no avail. I have sent Facebook everything they asked for and they respond with form messages and codes telling me I can now access my account. None of this works for me. (*See the end of this message for why I think this is not working for me.) As a result, I have created a new Facebook account and have set up a new version of my original FB Group with the number "2.0" added to the title. If you are already a member of my original group, you can still access that version and look back through the posts and photos there if you wish, but new members and new posts cannot be added to that old Group. To join my new FB Group, log into your Facebook account and search for "Historic Wabana Nfld 2.0" or copy and paste the following url into your search engine:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/1317525146263677
*When I created my FB account 8 years ago, I signed up for 2-Factor Authentication (2FA) in the hopes of staving off hackers. At that time, I had to provide 2 names of "trusted friends" who could receive codes on my behalf to help me get back into my account should I get locked out. Apparently, sometime after that, FB did away with the "trusted friends" requirement and instituted the use of a 2FA app, which would provide the necessary code required to get back into the locked out account. Unfortunately, I was not made aware of the need to install such an app. In fact, I did not know such a thing existed until I got locked. I immediately went to the App Store and downloaded the app. It was only then that I learned of the "Catch-22" in all this. When I tried to use the newly downloaded app to get a code to get back into my account, I was informed by Facebook that I had to log into my account first and install the app there!!! Seeing as I was already locked out of my account, this, of course, was impossible. If anyone knows of a way around this Catch-22, I would love to hear about it; you can email me at [email protected]
Today in the History of Bell Island: On September 25, 1909, St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church was opened “at the Mines,” ie. on The Green, “for the convenience of the miners.” Up until then, the only RC Church was St. Michael’s at The Front on the site now occupied by St. Michael’s High School. St. Peter’s was replaced in May 1938 when the Roman Catholic “basement” church of St. James was opened on Town Square. Both St. Peter's Church and church hall next door are believed to have burned to the ground in the late 1940s.
Also on this day in 1930, electricity was switched on in Lance Cove for the first time. This is a picture of St. Peter’s Church, courtesy of Gord Johnson. St. Peter's RC Hall is seen to the west of it. The photo was published in the October 1913 issue of Newfoundland Quarterly, p. 5, in an article by Archbishop Michael Francis Howley on "Newfoundland Name-Lore." The caption beneath the photo reads, "His Grace the Archbishop at the School House at Wabana, Bell Island." [The picture is of the church; perhaps he had visited the school house, which was probably near by.] |
It is with heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, dad and “Pa”. Hubert was born on April 10, 1942 on Bell Island, Newfoundland and passed away peacefully on September 12, 2024 at Cambridge Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family.
Left to mourn Hubert is his wife of 57 years, Ivy. Amazing dad to John (Angela) Fitzgerald and Jennifer (Jamie) Smith. Hubert’s pride and joy were his 3 granddaughters and 1 grandson, Amanda (Brandon Rebelo) Fitzgerald, Sarah Fitzgerald, Brody Smith & Brianne (Cole Mitchell) Smith.
Dear brother of Madonna Cole, Lorraine Galway, Lloyd, Wayne and Gary. Brother-in-law of Barbara Fitzgerald, Joan Fitzgerald, Dianne Fitzgerald & Jim (Christine) Doyle. Hubert will be sadly missed by many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Predeceased by his parents, Gordon & Elsie Fitzgerald (nee Clarke). Brothers Gerald, Gordon “June” Jr., Robert “Bob” & Glen. Sisters Lynda and Debbie Boone.
Hubert loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He loved watching WWE wrestling, reading Archies comics, doing jigsaw puzzles or simply being the neighborhood watch at home with Ivy. On Tuesday evenings you would find him having beer at his brother Lloyd’s house. The two of them enjoyed many chats in the backyard or in the basement solving all of the world’s problems, listening to Newfoundland music and reminiscing about family and friends, both here and gone.
Family welcomes friends to remember Hubert on Sunday September 15, 2024 at Corbett Funeral Home (95 Dundas St. N., Cambridge). Visitation to be held from 12:00 to 1:00 with funeral service to follow at 1:00. Family and friends are welcome to gather at the Cambridge Newfoundland Club immediately following the service.
A private interment will be held at a later date.
As an expression of sympathy, donations to the Cambridge Memorial Hospital where Hubert received excellent care in his final days.
A very special thank you to Lloyd, Barb and Stephanie. Your love and support has not gone unnoticed these last few days. We will be forever grateful.

"A Rough Day at the Office" is a new story from the pen of Dave Careless. It recounts how he and his family came from England to live on Bell Island in 1957-58. You can read all about it on this website by clicking the button on the right>>>

Today in the History of Bell Island: September 1930 was when stop signs were first erected at intersections on Bell Island. We went from only 3 motor cars in 1922 to 56 cars, 9 trucks and one motorcycle in 1929. In 1927, the driving test consisted of the successful completion of a figure 8. Until the Maneco went into service July 1, 1931, local ferries were not fitted for taking cars except as freight, for which the one-way fee was $10 (about $150. In today’s money). The Maneco was built for the Bell Island Steamship Company and equipped to carry 5 vehicles. Today in the History of Bell Island: On September 13, 1900, the first Magistrate's Court Session was held on Bell Island by Dr. Freebairn, J.P., in the Roman Catholic Schoolhouse. The schoolhouse was located on what would later become known as Court House Hill as that was where the Island's first court house was then being erected). 7 civil cases were heard in that first session and "Court" was held every Thursday thereafter. The Court House, pictured below with the Constable's Residence just east of it, was completed in 1901. Read more about it on this website by clicking the button below:

Today in the History of Bell Island: September 5, 1942, German U‑boat 513 torpedoed 2 loaded ore carriers anchored off Lance Cove. About noon on that day, the S.S. Saganaga was the first ship to be sunk. Realizing their danger, the crew of the nearby Lord Strathcona abandoned ship and went to help the Saganaga survivors. In the confusion, the Lord Strathcona swung about, hitting the submarine’s conning tower. The U‑boat recovered quickly and sank the Lord Strathcona. There were no casualties from that ship, but 29 of the Saganaga crew died; they were mostly from the United Kingdom. Only 4 bodies were recovered. They were laid out at the police station, where residents came to pay their respects, and were buried at St. Boniface Anglican cemetery. The photo below is of Joe Dwyer's painting of "Sinking the Saganaga" with the Lord Strathcona that is about to be sunk. You can read more about it on this website by clicking the button:

It is with much sadness, love and gratitude for a life well lived that the family of Myrle Ivan Vokey shares the news of his passing on August 17, 2024. Myrle’s life overflowed with love, adventures, service, and songs. His devotion to immediate and extended family, friends near and far, enriched the lives of all who knew and loved him.
Myrle was the fourth child born to Ethel and William Vokey on May 18, 1939 in the bustling town of Bell Island. His parents must have known that he was destined for great things since they gave him such a special and unique name, one that he would have to spell for others over the next 85 years! He had fond memories of a childhood filled with shenanigans and escapades as well as playing with his brothers, William (Dot) and Selby (Anita).
Myrle was a constant champion and advocate for his hometown of Bell Island. No friends ever came to visit Myrle and his wife, Marilyn, without crossing the tickle and touring his beloved home. In later years, he worked long and hard to bring as much prosperity to the island as he could. Equally as proud of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, as he was of Bell Island, Myrle always felt that he was living in the best little corner of the world. Our community and province have lost one of its biggest ambassadors and proudest sons. He was a Newfoundland treasure.
In 1960, meeting Marilyn Joan Carter, at church changed his life forever. Together they would build a relationship that would last for 65 years. Married for 58 years, their love story was an inspiration to those around them. With full commitment, respect and a few “yes, Marilyn”, they raised their children, Krista (Bruce Cooper), Tonya (Brad Young), Keith, and Jennifer (Mike Tobin). Their family home was the site of many happy times, parties with friends, family meals and, of course, music.
Above all else, nothing made Myrle more happy, content or proud than being called Poppy by his 8 grandchildren; Rhiannon (Liam Foley) and Moira (Jeremy Butt) Cooper, Thomas and Nicholas Young, Olivia and Arthur Vokey (mother Janet Tucker), and Rebecca and Sam Tobin. He took pride and joy in their accomplishments and daily activities. According to Myrle, “Grandchildren are my favorite hellos… and my hardest goodbyes.”.
Being a lifelong learner and educator, Myrle completed his Ed.D. through the University of Toronto. He held a variety of roles in the field of education throughout his impactful career, including Assistant Superintendent of Schools, Director of Professional Development at the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers’ Association, Executive Director of the Newfoundland and Labrador School Board Association. He also served as President of the Red Cross for both Newfoundland & Labrador and Canada. Additionally, he performed innumerable speaking engagements and is credited with creating the world-famous ‘Newfoundland Screech In’ ceremony. He was the recipient of many accolades and awards including the Red Cross Humanitarian of the Year. Myrle had the opportunity to travel to many places around the world. He interacted with royalty, dignitaries and politicians with the same ease as he would with his family and friends while playing a hand of cards at the kitchen table.
Myrle’s dedication to community service was a lifelong commitment for him. Some of his more significant contributions to organizations include Red Cross, Church Lads Brigade, St. Luke’s Homes, Computers for Schools, Patron of Kids Eat Smart, Eastport Festival, and St. John’s Gospel Folks Senior Choir.
Anyone who knew Myrle Vokey would know his passion for music. A self-taught musician, he played piano, guitar and accordion and could perform any tune requested (as long as it was recorded prior to 1965!). His repertoire comprised ‘good-old fashioned’ music; the country and western tunes that he loved so much, including his beloved Jim Reeves. Myrle was truly the life of the party, and he loved nothing more than a rousing sing-song. Friends could be at the door saying goodbye, and he would launch into another few songs extending the party as long as he could.
Myrle will be missed immensely by his family, whose lives were forever changed on August 17, 2024; including a large circle of extended friends and family with special mention of his aunt, Lillian Dicks. He touched many people with his warmth, kindness, gentleness, generosity, humility, and love. We will forever remember the stories and songs, the inspired life he led and the steadfast direction of his moral compass, and the talent he had for finding joy and laughter in the everyday.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Myrle’s name to the Canadian Red Cross or to the Church Lads Brigade would be gratefully accepted.
Visitation will take place at Carnell’s Funeral Home from 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 on Thursday, August 22. Details regarding the service to be announced at a later date.

Obituary for Henry Whalen, August 11, 2024, age 86:
1938-2024: It is with heartfelt sadness that the Whalen family announces the passing of family patriarch, Henry Thomas Whalen. He is predeceased by his parents, (father) Henry Whalen, (mother) Margaret (O’Brien), (brother) Valentine, (sister) Margaret, (niece) Angela Jackman and (daughter-in-law) Louisa Hawkins.
Henry (nicknamed Harry or Tom) was an East Coaster for most of his life and always a Newfoundlander. Born in Belle Island, Newfoundland, Aug 1,1938, he was the oldest of 12 children. He lived on the island until the age of 17, when he joined the Canadian Military, serving first with the 8th Hussars and then The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment), culminating in over a decade of service.

Posted August 12, 2024: Wabana miners did not receive paid annual leave until the union won that benefit sometime in the early 1950s. Even then, they only got one week off for summer vacation and one week for the Christmas break. Do you recall if the summer vacation period was increased for the "hourly paid employees," such as the miners and other labourers, before the mines closed in 1966, or if it remained at one week? If so, please email me at [email protected]. The notice on the right is from the August 1954 Submarine Miner. The one below is from the July 1957 Submarine Miner. |

It is with deep sorrow that the family of Rivlyn Galway announce his sudden death at the age of 78. Rivlyn departed this world at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John's on Saturday, July 27. His family is devastated by the loss of a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
He was predeceased by his parents, Andrew and Agnes Galway, as well as his sister Barbara Brooks.
Rivlyn's devotion to his family was endless and his passing leaves behind a lifetime of cherished memories for many including his beloved wife, Stella Galway, who was his companion for more than 50 years. Together, they created a life filled with laughter and love. Rivlyn held a special place in his heart for his daughters Janet (William) of Mississauga, ON, Karen (Robert) of Chicago, IL, and Erin (Matthew) of Dundas, Ontario. The arrival of his cherished grandchildren, Luka, Jack, Bridget, Kaleb, Kieran, and Isla, only added to the abundance of laughter and love that filled his life.
Rivlyn is survived by his dear sister, Roslyn Murphy (Paul), of Georgetown, ON who he enjoyed an unbreakable bond with. In addition to his sister, Rivlyn leaves behind sisters-in-law Margaret Stamp (Tom), Marietta Nurse (Chuck), and Regina Young as well as brothers-in-law Jim Brazil Jr. and Patrick Kearsey. A heartfelt tribute goes out to Leanne Kearsey, Rivlyn's beloved niece, who not only held a cherished place in his heart but also demonstrated much love and generosity towards her uncle during his recent health journey.
In addition to his immediate family, Rivlyn's circle of friends extended to include John and Barbara Barron, who were like family to him. Their support and companionship throughout the years brought him great joy and enriched his life tremendously.
Rivlyn had a rich and fulfilling career in education and was actively involved with the Newfoundland & Labrador Teachers' Association (NLTA) throughout his 30+ years. In 1999, he moved to Schreiber, Ontario, serving as principal at Holy Angels elementary school for 7 years and having left an incredible positive impact on the students and school community. In his retirement, he cherished time with his wife, Stella, in their family home in Gander.
Rivlyn was a storyteller with a deep appreciation for the written and spoken word. But more than that he possessed a mischievous sense of humour, always ready to share a joke or engage in playful banter with those around him.
Rivlyn's presence will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on through the memories he created and the impact he had. May his legacy of love, laughter, and storytelling continue to bring solace to all who knew him.

Elaine, a cherished wife, beloved mother, adored grandmother, great grandmother, sister, Aunt and dear friend to many, passed away peacefully in her home, in her bed, surrounded by her husband, Will, her children, Renee, (Amanda in heaven), Erin (Mark), and William, her grandchildren and her great grand son.
Elaine was known for her ability to light up a room, with her beautiful smile and big energy. She would always adapt to her surroundings, pay attention to detail and was known wholeheartedly for her professionalism. She was a fighter, right until the end. Her dignity, strength, and perseverance will be remembered, forever. Elaine was a go getter, and a mentor. She was and always will be a role model to her sector (Early Childhood Education), in which she loved and embedded to those that knew her. Elaine was a guiding light to all who knew her, she’s our “Momma Rainbow!” She loved her church and church family, with all her heart and kept her faith alive always. Elaine dedicated her life to nurturing and caring for others, selflessly, and most certainly to children and serviced the families of our province within her dream and vision. Her passion for childcare led her to start her own daycare, in a small little apartment, way back in 1986 to create an important legacy, where she provided a safe, loving, and educational environment for countless children and families, and her vision grew. Her unwavering commitment to the well-being of others left an indelible mark on the community. When Elaine was not in her business vail, she was often found with her rubber boots on, fishing with her fly pole, at her cabin, for peace and tranquility. Elaine loved to “trout”, and she was good at that too! She loved her beautiful “Bell Island”, very much. Such a special place.
A loving wife to Will, and devoted mother to her four children, Renee, Amanda, Erin and William. Her grandchildren, Ali, Maddy, Jules, Spencer, Joseph, Meadow, Justin, Isabelle, Wesley and her new great grandson, Malikai. They were the apples of her eye, her purpose and she cherished every moment spent with them. Her love, wit and wisdom will continue to inspire and guide them.
“Momma Rainbow” will be remembered for her kindness, her strength in the face of adversity, and her ability to find joy in everyday moments. Her legacy of love and perseverance will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her. If you knew her just once, you’d never forget her. Elaine will forever be a fighter and a force to be reckoned with.
She loved her husband, Will with all her being and he truly loved her with all his heart and soul, their love is a rare entity. They had a beautiful partnership, one that most would never know. A love that lasts eternal, as in their vows, “life and eternity”!
Predeceased by her loving parents, Frank and Margaret Leonard, her Mother and father in law, Bertha and John Reid, her daughter Amanda, her brothers Frank and Don, her Sister Alice. Her sisters in law, Dot, Lena, Dorthy and Dianne. Leaving behind so many loved ones, siblings, Peggy, Robert and Ron and Geraldine, In addition all her special in-laws the Reid family, the Leonard family, the Pynn family, the Cousins family, and all her Rainbow family and friends.
A special thank you to Peggy and Ron whose selflessness in our time of need was truly incredible. We love you we are indeed grateful. To Dr. Vidyasankar, your kindness, and patience will never be forgotten, thank you. To Mark, thank you for pulling us through, she loved you. To Elaine’s dear friends, she truly loved your time together. To Mike thank you for all you’ve done for us over the years. Dear dad, we got you. “Her dream came true with her faith in God, and because of her faith, her dreams came true!” “Will” (her husband)!

Today in the History of Bell Island: July 20, 1895 was the day mining operations actually got underway at Wabana. At the time, it was reported that supplies were arriving at St. John’s for the mine, including two horses for the surface pits. A large quantity of dressed lumber for the construction of buildings was sent out by train to Kelligrews and ferried across to the Island. Work on the building of the pier and tramway was going ahead. By August, 160 miners were employed and their pay was one dollar for a 10-hour day.

We are heartbroken to announce the sudden passing of Shawn Jerome Brown at his home in Cambridge, Ontario on June 28, 2024 at the age of 62. He has finally been reunited with his predeceased sons, Brandon & Jordan. He will be lovingly missed by his devoted wife Paulinka Yee of 23 years & his stepson Connor. Shawn was a cherished Poppy to his granddaughters Kyla & Madycen.
He will be dearly missed by his siblings Blanche (Dux), Carol (Chuck), Glenn, Laura (Tim), Marlene (Scott), Connie (Jody), in-laws Don, John, Glenys (Dan) & Nadia (Dane), his many nieces & nephews and his faithful companions Rolo, Relik & Mr. Jinx. Shawn was predeceased by his parents Frank & Edna Brown, siblings Gary, Frank, Janet & Virginia.
Shawn was born on Bell Island, Newfoundland where he was more recently able to reconnect with his beloved island at their home away from home. He spent his youth in Preston, Ontario, kicking up dirt and raising hell. Shawn was a mechanic who could fix anything, he loved loud music, dirt bikes, motorcycles, hot rods, UFC, & hockey (how about them Leafs?). NASCAR has lost one of their biggest fans. He was a Preston boy who had many great friends that he considered his chosen family. Even though he was a rough and tough guy, he had a heart of gold, always thinking of others before himself. Generous with his time, he was always assisting others, whether he knew them or not. Shawn lived large and filled up every room he entered with his booming voice and quirky, newfie way with words. He will be sorely missed by everyone he touched.
Visitation will be held at Coutts Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, 96 St Andrews Street, Cambridge on Thursday, July 4th from 2-4 p.m., 7-9 p.m. and Friday, July 5th from 9:30-10:30 a.m. A Funeral Mass will take place at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church on Friday, July 5th at 11 a.m with a reception to follow at the Newfoundland Club. Cremation will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donate to Heart & Stroke, tune-up your car, check the air pressure in your tires, or consider an act of kindness to someone in need just as he would have done.

July 2, 1950-July 5, 2024. In loving memory of Helen Picco: a devoted mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, sister, aunt, coworker and friend.
On Friday, July 5, 2024, Helen passed peacefully away, surrounded by her family expressing their personal messages of unconditional love.
She was predeceased by her infant brothers: Robert and David, father George, mother Sarah (Piercey), and sister Dianne LeGrow (Carl).
She cherished her sons and their partners: Chad (Pamela) and Chris (Leanne) and her three granddaughters: Sarah, Sophia and Ava beyond measure, finding pure joy in their presence. Her two sisters: Pauline Bennett (Walter), Marie Hibbs (Hubert), held a special place in her heart, and she treasured every moment spent with them.
Helen was a strong, confident, independent woman who loved her family fiercely. Helen's greatest joy came from time spent with her beloved family and extended circle of lifelong friends. She shared a special bond with her devoted friends Lucy Roper (John) and Diane Bishop, as well as her niece (honorary daughter) Joanne Ivey (Scott), creating cherished memories that will be forever treasured in their hearts.
Helen had quick wit and an incredible sense of humour. You could always count on her for a funny perspective, dry joke, or mild sarcasm, while still being respectful and inclusive of everyone.
Throughout her successful career at the Arts & Culture Centre as a Box Office Manager, Helen maintained a reputation of integrity, professionalism, authenticity and kindness, earning the respect of her colleagues and patrons alike. Her dedication to her work was a reflection of her commitment to excellence in all aspects of her life.
Despite facing countless challenges of pulmonary fibrosis in her final years, Helen remained a pillar of strength and grace, continuing to shower her loved ones with affection and support.
Helen's legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering devotion will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to have been blessed by her presence. She will be deeply missed and remembered for the profound impact she had on those around her.
Our family would like to extend our deepest appreciation for the exceptional compassion, genuine kindness and professionalism shown by Dr. Vidyasankar at the Health Science Centre over the past 3 years. Today in the History of Bell Island: July 1st is the day we commemorate the soldiers of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment who fought and died at the Battle of Beaumont Hamel in World War 1. The photo below is of some of the first Bell Island soldiers who volunteered to fight overseas in that war. Five of these boys & men would die on July 1, 1916 at Beaumont Hamel: Martin Cahill, Thomas Carroll, Robert Lahey, Michael Ross and George Sparkes. (Robert Kershaw would die in March 1918.) Three other Bell Islanders not shown in the photo would also die on July 1, 1916: Richard Flemming, Michael Jackman and Walter Thomas. (Walter actually died of his wounds on July 15th; he lay wounded and bleeding on the battle field for three long days before he was found and taken to hospital.) Lest we forget. Today in the History of Bell Island: Memorial Day was first observed in Newfoundland and Labrador on July 1, 1917 to remember those soldiers of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment who died during the Battle of the Somme of the First World War. Memorial Day was first observed on Bell Island in 1921. The Monument at the intersection of Davidson Avenue and Memorial Street was unveiled on June 15, 1921 in "a ceremony that was attended by thousands." Bell Island held its first Memorial Day ceremony on Saturday, July 2nd, 1921. "All denominations held church services, the returned soldiers and sailors attending their respective churches as well as the members of the Brigades. At noon, the parades met at the War Memorial where Capt. L.C. Murphy explained the significance of the occasion. Comrade N.G. Lodge, president of the GWVA, brought along a very fine wreath of laurel and natural leaves. It had been presented by Sir John C. Crosbie and artistically arranged by Miss Agnes Dwyer. The wreath was laid at the base of the monument on behalf of the people of the island by Magistrate Power, who gave an appropriate address." On Bell Island during the mining years, July 1st was not a statutory holiday; the service at the War Memorial was held on the Sunday following July 1st.
