HISTORIC WABANA FACEBOOK GROUP BLOG
January to June 2025

by Gail Hussey-Weir
Created Jan. 1, 2025 / Updated July 13, 2025

Welcome to this blog, which I created on Nov. 8, 2021 as a way for Bell Islanders near and far who are not members of my Facebook Group "Historic Wabana Nfld 2.0" to see some of the things posted there as the Group is "Private," which means only members can see it.
In this Blog, you will see some of the things that you would see on my FB group, especially the obituaries. You won't be able to comment here in real time like you would on the FB group, but if you want to share your thoughts on anything you see, or even send in your own photos to be included here, you can do so by emailing me (Gail) at:  [email protected].
Just as you would see on the FB Group, the latest posts are shown first. Unlike the FB Group, you will see buttons next to some posts. You can click on the button provided to read more about the subject at hand. When you are finished, click the back arrow in the top left corner of the page to return to this Blog. Click the Blog in the top menu to visit other Blog pages.

Obituary for Margaret (nee Hammond) Oake, June 8, 2025, age 82.
Picture

November 5, 1942 – Lance Cove, Bell Island, Newfoundland to June 8, 2025 – Calgary, Alberta:

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Margaret Oake, who was called home to the Lord on Sunday, June 8, 2025, in Calgary, AB, at the age of 82.

Born on November 5, 1942, in Newfoundland, Margaret lived a life filled with deep faith, service, and unwavering love. Her journey took her from Newfoundland to Toronto and finally to Calgary, where she spent her later years surrounded by those who loved her dearly.

Margaret devoted much of her professional life to healthcare, working as a cardiology technician and later as a supervisor. Her dedication and compassion were evident not only in her career but also in her many years of volunteer work. A proud and active member of the Catholic Women’s League (CWL), Margaret lived out her faith through action—always giving, always helping, always praying.

Margaret was predeceased by her beloved husband Fredrick, her son David, and her daughter Colleen. Though her losses were profound, her strength and grace in the face of hardship were nothing short of inspirational.

She leaves behind her loving grandson Jason (Sasha), and her treasured great-grandchildren, Owen and Scarlett, who were the lights of her life. Her family will forever carry her spirit in their hearts.

Margaret will be remembered for her gentleness, her deep resilience, and the quiet strength of her faith. To know her was to witness an angel on earth—kind, devoted, and full of love.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Name Catholic Church (2223 34 Street S.W., Calgary, AB) on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow in the Parish Hall.

Today in the History of Bell Island: On June 30, 1966, after 71 years, Dominion Wabana Mines ceased operations. On this date in 2016, I launched this website as a means of sharing some of the history that I have gathered over the years. I invite you to explore my website, where I am adding historical information and photos on an ongoing basis. In the drop-down menu at the top of this page, under HISTORY, you will find the history of the Wabana Mines; Mining-related Fatalities; Company Housing photos; Monuments & Murals; a Timeline of Amenities; Women's Work & Social Life; and other aspects of Bell Island's history. Under PUBLICATIONS, you can read issues of the SUBMARINE MINER. Under PEOPLE, see stories of individual Bell Island people. Under EXTRAS, find a variety of entertaining stories. The PHOTO GALLERY features many historic photos, including the Southey collection of slides. Taken sometime between 1957 and 1963, they give a good idea of how Bell Island looked when the mines were at their peak. The Southey photo below is an aerial view looking north over No. 3 Mine Yard with No. 6 Mine Yard in the upper left distance. In the foreground are Scotia Company miners’ houses on Scotia Ridge. On the north side of the arena are 5 Scotia Company staff family houses on what was known as Wall Street (no longer there). The houses to the east of No. 3 Yard are Dominion Company miners’ houses on Ten Commandments Range and Dominion Range. The road going left to right just north of No. 3 Yard is West Mines Road, which becomes No. 2 Road after the intersection with Davidson Avenue at the NE corner of No. 3 Yard. The houses in the distance are on The Green.

Obituary for David Hammond, March 7, 2025, age 77.
Picture

It is with a combination of solace and profound sadness that we share the passing of David Wayne Hammond.
David was born on Bell Island, Newfoundland, on November 9, 1947 to Patrick and Amelia Hammond, where he joined siblings Patrick, Kevin, Terrance, and Clara. As the fifth of six children, David would be joined by younger brother, Lawrence, the following year.
David met Eileen Healey in 1968, when she made the single best decision of her life and invited him to a school dance. He agreed, and their many, many chapters together began. Following weekly dates at the Teen Centre, and several kicks at a tire on their walk home, David and Eileen were married at Holy Rosary Church in Toronto on June 6, 1970. Their marriage formalized David’s inclusion into the Healey family, where he was already well loved by new in-laws Fergus, Clarissa (‘Mrs.’) and Pop (‘Mr.’). David’s treasured family expanded to include Gerald (Marylin), Trish (Bas), Kevin (Mary), Maureen (Tom) and Sandra (Bruce). David and Eileen’s own family soon grew to include son Dwayne (Sheila), daughter Melanie (Mike) and son-in-law, Joe. It also included beloved pets Benny and Oliver. Their home was everything David and Eileen had dreamed for their future—loving, stable, and full of a lot of fun. Dave’s family and loved ones were always at the centre of everything he did. His grandsons, Corey, Darcy, and Malcolm brought him immeasurable pride and joy in his later years.
David found great value and meaning in his work, first at Stanley Bostitch where he worked in shipping/receiving for 32 years, and later at Service Master and Husky Technologies. “That man does the work of four men” was a common sentiment shared by those who worked with him.
Dave’s legacy remains in small acts of service, kindness, and care: hundreds of cups of tea (Melissa), airport pickup/drop offs (any family/friends flying in or out of Toronto for literally decades), drives anywhere people needed to go, bags carried in and out of cars, dishes never left undone. He was, and remains, loved by the Hammond [Chris, (Wanda), Keira (Alex), Kassidy, Kacey, Lawrence Jr. (Stephanie)], Adams, and Mobilio families, and many nieces and nephews [Tina, Darrin (Vanessa), Melissa (Mike, Lucy), Adam (Stacey), Sara (Jon), John (Kris), Erin (Keith), Devon (Nate)], friends, and coworkers.
David now joins his parents, Mother and Father-in-law, Lawrence, Ruth, Gerald, and Bas. Cremation will take place after the ceremony. Interment will follow once Eileen is ready to join him for their final chapter together. Dave was used to waiting for her. He doesn’t mind.
The family wishes to extend our eternal gratitude to the wonderful staff at Hawthorn Woods Community Care Centre, and the staff, especially Poppy, at A1 Taxi for your kindness and compassion. Your work made a world of difference at a very difficult time. Thank you.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Association of Canada would be appreciated.

Obituary for Christine (nee Boone) Townsend-Trimble, January 5, 2025, age 70.
Picture

Our globe-trotting adventurer, embarked on her final journey on January 5, 2025, when she was peacefully called home to be with her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
Born on April 6, 1954, on Newfoundland’s Bell Island, Christine devoted her life to family, right from the start. Her passion, dedication, and unwavering commitment to family and friends continued throughout her life.
Christine’s greatest joy and achievement was her family who she worked tirelessly to provide opportunities for. She provided a warm, loving, and nurturing environment and her unconditional love showed no bounds. Christine truly led by example and taught a great deal about faith, forgiveness, encouragement, positivity, mercifulness, support and love.  She was always the first to offer help, from a shoulder to cry on, or an ear to listen, her loving care and faithful prayers, or meals, rides, visits and her time, all of which deeply impacted on the lives of those who knew and loved her.
Christine will be remembered for her resilience, perseverance and indomitable spirit (not to mention her unmistakable laugh and legendary meatballs). She had an extraordinary gift for cultivating deep and lasting relationships.  Christine was a loyal, trustworthy, selfless and giving woman to the end. The world truly was a better place with her in it and we are all better off for having been blessed to know and love her.
Christine leaves behind and will be profoundly missed by her loving husband of 15 months, Derrick Townsend, her three adoring children, Trevor Trimble (Andrea), Darryl Trimble (Janine) and Crystal McDermid (Shane), her 8 wonderful grandchildren Micheal, T.J., Cyrus (Summer), Anthony (Liz), Keirstin (Evan), Aldin, Ava and Bethany (and her mom Jen) and her great-grandchildren Soleil and baby Trimble on the way. She will also be missed by brothers Tony Boone (Lorrie), Paul Boone, Daniel Boone (Wendy), Nick Milicevic and sister Geri Greenfield and by sisters-in-law Linda Marschall, Judy Trimble, Sheila Trimble, Kym Cronkwright (Jeff), Sandi Butler (Fred), Marlene Hall (Murray) and brothers-in-law, Keith Townsend (Lita), Ken Stewart (Helen) Randy Stewart (Robin), and by her caring Goddaughter, Robyn MacKeigan (Rod).

Obituary for Chris Kent, June 4, 2025, age 61.
Picture

With broken hearts and profound sadness, we announce the passing of Chris Kent (age 61) on June 4, 2025. A long-time resident of Nova Scotia, Chris was born on Bell Island, Newfoundland Chris leaves to mourn the love of his life and best friend, wife Corina (Bickford) and treasured companions, his standard poodles Bella and Quinn. He will be profoundly missed by his brothers, Wayne (Wanda); Brian (Lynn); Lorne (Linda); Paul (Liz); and Edward; his sisters, Sharon (Dave); Madonna (Rui); father-in-law, Charlie Bickford; brother-in-law, Carlson Bickford (Karen); and ten nieces and nephews. He also leaves to mourn a circle of dear and close friends in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. Chris was predeceased by his parents Margaret and Edward (Ned) Kent, sister Maureen Kent, mother-in-law Gloria Bickford and sister-in-law Eileen Kent. Throughout his long stay in hospital, he was lovingly supported and cared for by his devoted wife Corina. To the close friends and wonderful neighbours who cared for Bella and Quinn during this time - thank you! We smile in remembering his detailed way of recounting events, but he will be particularly remembered as a “gentle giant” who exuded optimism, kindness, tenderness, and generosity. Chris enjoyed a remarkably successful career in property assessment that spanned over 30 years. He spent his career working throughout Newfoundland and Labrador and in Nova Scotia. A passionate classic car enthusiast he never passed up an opportunity to talk cars, read about cars, look at cars, buy cars, fix cars, drive cars or ride along in cars. The familiar refrain from Corina and his family was always “What, another car Chris?.” His love was classic muscle cars. He could never get enough and in his last months he expressed his sadness at not being able to fulfill his dream of restoring cars in his retirement. While Chris knew he was surrounded by the love of his family it was the constant presence of the greatest love of his life Corina that sustained him. One of his last messages to her spoke of the unique and special bond this couple of 41 years shared “I was blessed when God matched us together many years ago as I couldn't have had a better life partner. You are my best friend and the love of my life. While life has given us more than our fair share of challenges, having your love, strength and support has helped us overcome difficult times. With you by my side, I am filled with hope ….” We hope that as Chris took his final ride on this his final journey it was in the Challenger of his dreams to a great embrace in Heaven. Chris rescued several dogs over his lifetime. If you would like to make a donation in his memory the family would appreciate donations to your local SPCA, or another dog rescue organization of your choice. Cremation has been entrusted to T.J. Tracey Cremation. A celebration of life will be held on Bell Island at a later date. Words of comfort and special memories may be shared with the family by visiting www.tjtracey.com

Obituary for Gary Gosine, June 7, 2025, age 67.
Picture

GARY GOSINE (July 31, 1957 - June 7, 2025)
With broken hearts, the family of Gary Gosine announce his passing on June 7, 2025 at the Dr. Walter Templeman Hospital on Bell Island at the age of 67 years.
Leaving to mourn with cherished memories are his wife, Debbie (Tobin), children; Kandice and Bradley (Kristen), the joys of his life, his grandchildren; Evelyn, Max, Beau, Ella and Maycie, his sisters; Ann Brazil and Sandra Dunn (Larry), nieces and nephews; Andrea, Ethan, Derek, Todd Jr., Trent, Philip, Jordon and Kenneth, and many other nieces and nephews, cousins; Tom (Joan) and Danny, brothers-in-law; Todd and Gerald, sisters-in-law; Maria, Silvyann, Tina, Georgina, Virginia, Darlene, Lori Lynn, Miranda, and Frances, along with a large number of extended family members and friends, whom he dearly loved.
Gary is predeceased by his parents; Harold and Kathleen Gosine (Murray), loving aunt; Sadie Rockwell (Gosine), brother; Dave Gosine, nephew; Darryl Gosine, brother-in-law, Myles Brazil, grandmother; Sity Anne, in-laws; Gerald and Marjorie Tobin, and a number of other special family members and friends.
Gary was a true Bell Islander and idolized his community. He spent 35 years with the Town of Wabana, notably as long-standing Mayor, in which he leaves behind a remarkable legacy. He lived by the phrase, “it’s not what your community can do for you, it’s what YOU can do for your community”, and this was apparent in the many acts of service that Gary engaged in.
Anyone who knew him, knew that his phone was always on and he would answer the call anytime. He wasn’t afraid to raise his voice for any cause that he felt passionate about. He was a dedicated member to many committees and organizations, including the Kiwanis Club of Bell Island, Bell Island Boys & Girls Club, Minor Hockey, as well as the Bell Island Ferry Users Committee, where he spent a number of years advocating for change for the people of his community.
He was a dedicated coach of the Bell Island Minor Hockey Association, where he built a lifetime of memories alongside his son, Bradley. His passion for the sport rippled out in rooting for his beloved Toronto Maple Leafs. He also always made sure that those who were underprivileged got a chance to participate in the sport and often filled his vehicle with as many children as possible to get them to the rink. Gary especially loved watching his granddaughter Evelyn take on new and exciting challenges, especially as a goalie this past year. He would rave about Evelyn’s shut-outs to anyone who would listen.
Gary had a decorated political career that he and his family were so proud of. In recent years, he was able to slow down the final chapter of his life and enjoy the presence of his grandchildren. He truly adored their company and listening to the elaborate stories they would have for him during each visit. We will forever hold the memories made with Gary close to our hearts and are forever grateful that we were able to gather with so many of his closest family and friends during his final days. The family also extends a special thank you to the individuals who played a role in providing care and love to Gary in recent months, and over the years throughout his troubled health.
Although we cannot picture a world without our dad in it, our hearts are lighter as we read through the beautiful memories that so many individuals have shared about the lives our dad has touched. We are so grateful for how his legacy will continue to live on.
Resting at Pendergast’s Funeral Home on Bell Island, on Tuesday, June 10 from 12-9 pm and Wednesday, June 11 from 10 am-1:00 pm, with Funeral Mass to follow at St. Michael’s Parish at 2:00 pm. Followed by interment at the Roman Catholic Cemetery and reception at St. Michael's Parish Hall.
Flowers greatly appreciated or a donation can be made in Gary’s memory to the Bell Island Boys & Girl’s Club at [email protected] or to the Wabana Volunteer Fire Department.

The photo below of the 100th Anniversary of St. Michael's RC Church, Memorial Street, 1975, was posted to Facebook by Terry MacDonald. Due to structural weakness, and the inability of the declining population to maintain it, this church was torn down in 1983, at which time the RC Church on Town Square was renamed St. Michael's and became the titular parish church.

John Clayton Clements, March 2, 1938-May 14, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our amazing husband, dad, and poppy at the age of 87.
He was surrounded by his family in his final days which everybody knows was his greatest pride and joy.

He leaves behind his wife of 49 years Marion and his seven children, Karen (Carlson), Bonnie (Barry), Anita (Steve), Brenda (Greig), Michelle (Pat), Wanda (Mike) and his only son Johnny (predeceased by his daughter-in-law Julie).
As well as 13 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

He was born on Bell Island, Newfoundland, and along with his 16 siblings had an amazing childhood. He was a very hard working man and at an early age had left home to work. From supporting his siblings when his father had taken ill to providing for his our family, he was very proud of his accomplishments over his lifetime.

In the late 80s, he took his wife and children and moved to Ontario to give them a better life. He always wanted to be surrounded by family and friends. He was very social and loved telling stories.

We would like to thank the nursing staff and PSW‘s at Cambridge Memorial Hospital for their care and compassion in his last days.

Obituary for Patrick Keels, May 12, 2025, age 76:

It is with the heaviest of broken hearts that we announce the passing of Patrick Augustine Keels of Bell Island, Newfoundland, who passed away at the Health Sciences Center on May 12, 2025 at the age of 76 after a long battle of complications from his life long illness with diabetes. Patrick will be resting at Pendergast Funeral Home on Bell Island on May 15 from 7-9pm, May 16 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. There will be a service at St. Micheal’s church at 11:45am on May 17 with a reception to follow directly after downstairs.
Patrick was a devoted husband, father and friend to many. He was never seen without a smile on his face, loved his family and to be as social as possible. He was one of the largest Montreal Canadien’s fans ever known to man and would love to banter with anyone about them no matter how bad they lost over and over. (I may get in trouble for this one.)
He fought for as long and hard as he could and never complained once about how much pain he was in which showed how truly strong he was in character.
He will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 49 years Eileen (Murphy), daughters Patricia (Matthew), Darlene (Brian) and son Michael. His beautiful grandchildren, Ryan, Dylan, Rebecca, Reanna and Abagail. His great-grandchildren, Jackson, Kade and Connor. He was blessed to have such a large family of siblings including Mary, Marilyn, Joan, Agnes, Christine, Colleen, Larry, John, Ken and Maurice.
He was predeceased by his parents Lawrence and Mary (Kent), his sister Catherine, twin brother Arther and brothers Colin, Errol, Pete & Mike.
Our family would like to express their sincerest gratitude to everyone that helped in his care including Claudine Newell, Paula Foley, Lori Hann, Cheryl Somerton, the staff at the Dr. Walter Templeton Hospital, the staff at the Topsail Road dialysis
clinic and all the paramedics who ever helped with his care for their kindness, professionalism and compassion that was shown to Patrick over the last 5 years.
He will be deeply missed and his memories will continue to live on in the hearts of his family and friends forever. He leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness and strength to all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Obituary for Carol (nee Skehans) Kitchen, May 4, 2025, age 84.
Picture

CAROL KITCHEN (April 8, 1941-May 4, 2025) of Bell Island.
It is with profound sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of our beloved mother after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Despite the pain and suffering, she never allowed it to alter her kind and gentle spirit. The extent of her suffering was never obvious as she endured it with her all familiar smile. Our Mom was an exceptional lady whose love and dedication to her family was truly remarkable and exceptional. Her greatest joy in life was the gathering of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Cooking, baking, cleaning, and enjoying the company of relatives and friends brought her so much pleasure; the welcome mat was always ready for visitors. She truly cherished country music and videos and could be found echoing through the house as one entered. One of the highlights of her life was having the opportunity to attend Daniel O’Donnell’s concert; she was absolutely ecstatic. Mom was a committed and determined hard worker in all of her undertakings: as a teacher, a retail sales clerk, a volunteer, and finally co-owner with her husband Wince of a successful convenience store where she worked until retirement. She took such pride in dealing with the public where strangers often became close friends.
Mom is predeceased by her parents William and Nina (Kean); husband Wince (2018); Brothers, Ralph, Bill, and John; Sisters, Diane King (Lindsay deceased), Vivian Howell (Sigmund deceased); Son-in-law, Frankie Pendergast.
Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories: Daughters, Tena Pendergast (B0b), Wanda (Wayne), Lynn; Son, Scott (Angela); Grandchildren; Kayla Pendergast (Edward), Stephen Pendergast (Lisa), Chelsea Babb (Matt), Jillian Kitchen (Logan), Brooklyn Kitchen; Great grandchildren; Lincoln and Callum Pendergast; Maddie and Bailey Babb; Sisters, Joan Parsons (Sidney), Irene Eveleigh (Malc), Jean Kearley (Raymond); Brother, Terry (Cynthia). Sisters-in-law: Marg Brazil Skehans (William deceased), Sally Skehans (John deceased), Marg Tucker (Fred deceased). Lillian Basha, Marena Shannahan (Ron deceased) as well as a large number of nieces, nephews, and the many friends she has made over the years. Also, Mom’s biggest fan and her truest companion of whom she was the best grand fur baby sitter, Summer. She will be so missed as she was so loved.
Flowers gratefully accepted or donation made be made in Mom’s memory to the Wabana Volunteer Fire Department to email [email protected]; or to the Bell Island Boys and Girls Club via EMT [email protected].
A sincere thank you to all who provided medical attention to our mother over the years, especially Dr. A. Laurie and the Staff at the Dr. W. Templeman Hospital, Bell Island, and the medical staff of St. Clare’s Hospital, St. John’s.
Visitation at Pendergast’s Funeral Home on Thursday, May 8th 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 followed by cremation with a Church Service to be held at St. Michael’s Church, Bell Island, Friday, May 16th at 2:00. Reception to follow at St. Michael’s Hall.
“With you, Mom, we have multiple memories, all good ones which will indeed last a lifetime.”

Shirley Crane, February 17, 2025, age 88.
Picture

Shirley Marie Crane passed peacefully on February 17, 2025 at the age of 88. She loved baking homemade bread, a good penny sale, and "bingo night" with the girls; it didn't take much to make her smile. The love she had for her children showed whenever someone asked her about them.
She spent her retirement enjoying endless summer nights at the trailer with friends and family, going on the occasional boat ride, and living life to its fullest.
A special thank you to the staff at St. Mary's General Hospital for their kind words and compassionate care given to Shirley. Their work is appreciated beyond words.
In lieu of flowers, donations towards St. Mary's General Hospital or the Alzheimer Society of Canada in support of Dementia Research would be appreciated.

Raymond Myers passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 9th, 2025 after a long period of health challenges, during which he amazed everyone with his strength and resilience. Shortly after the passing of his beloved son Raymond, we take comfort in knowing that they are together once again.
Raymond is the cherished husband of Marilyn (nee Peddle) of 51 years together, filled with love and memories. Proud father of Nancy (Mark) Evans, Grandfather of Chelsie Laurie (Austin Payne) and son-in-law of Don Peddle. He also held a special place in his heart for his son’s partner, Christina McArthur and her children Terika and Jaxson. Dear brother to Sheila (George) Basha, Kevin (Lorraine), Mary (John) Murphy, Angela (Mike) McNamara, Elizabeth Young, Theresa Wylie (Rick Faulkner), Robert (Margaret), Christine (Dino) Marrocco and brother in law to Carol Myers, Joanne Myers, Susan Cooke, Donna Myers, Wayne (Jean) Peddle and Judy McGill. Ray loved to be outside, whether he was golfing, fishing or camping, he was happiest when he was out enjoying life. He especially loved spending time at his trailer, surrounded by good company, good laughs and a bit of peace and quiet.
Growing up in a big family had a big influence on who Ray was. It shaped his values, his sense of humour and his love for sharing stories. He always had something to say and more often than not he had everyone around him laughing. He could strike up a conversation with anyone. Never shy, he was always such a presence in any room.
Ray had a big heart, and if you were one of his people, you knew it. He made time for those he cared for and truly enjoyed just being around them. That’s what we will cherish; his stories, his humour and how easy it was to feel at home when he was around.

Obituary for Francis (Frank) Power, April 30, 2025, age 86.
Picture

Francis (Frank) Thomas Power passed away peacefully with his loving wife, Shirley (née O’Toole), by his side on Wednesday, April 30. Frank was born on July 29, 1938, on Bell Island, Newfoundland and Labrador.
He was predeceased by his parents, James and Isabel (McCarthy), and his beloved sister, Sheila (Faulkner).
In his youth, Frank was an accomplished hockey player, representing both Bell Island and St. Bonaventure’s College in St. John’s. Touted as “one of the smartest forwards on the Avalon Peninsula and a terror to every goalie,” Frank took his love of competition and turned it into a successful career in business. Equally dedicated to his community, he was a uniquely skilled fundraiser for the Mary Queen of Peace Parish Hall, Minor Hockey, and local food banks, serving as a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus.
The great love of Frank’s life was undoubtedly his family. He was a devoted father to his three children, Colin, Paul (Rhonda), and Lynn Ann (Rodney), and an adoring grandfather to Emily, Scott, and Alexander. Frank was the founding—and only—member of Power’s Taxi, ferrying his grandchildren to and from school, hockey, music lessons, and eventually university. Always ready with a hot take on local politics, the fashion du jour, or a listening ear for the harder parts of growing up, he was a constant and cherished presence.
In recent years, through the hardship of illness, Frank remained focused on ensuring that his beloved Shirley would be cared for beyond his time. His legacy of love, strength, and whip-smart humour will echo for decades to come.
He leaves to mourn his brother Bob (Sheila), brother-in-law Gary, and many nieces and nephews across Canada and the U.S.

Following his school years, Garry eventually found his passion and proudly joined the Metropolitan Toronto Police force where he spent his next 14 years, mostly in 14 division ‘pounding the pavement and arresting the bad guys’. His camaraderie with his fellow officers was a valued memory throughout Garry’s lifetime, he respected and valued everyone of them and was so grateful to have maintained a friendship with many.
Garry moved to Penetang/Midland in 2002 at the start of a new career as a mortgage broker. His love for helping people achieve their dream of owing a home was something that made him smile and gave him a great sense of pride and accomplishment. Today in the History of Bell Island: On April 4, 1900, a sign of Bell Island’s growing importance in Newfoundland’s economy was the appointment of Peter Quigley as the community's first Preventive (Customs) Officer. 4 years later on this date in 1904, the St. John's Daily News said of Bell Island: No section of the Colony contributes anything like the proportion of wealth to the public treasury; in the face of which, their mail service is abominable, the roads are neglected, and the wharf conveniences necessary for the trade of the place are practically valueless. The August 1903 photo below shows what the wharf at The Beach looked like as people gathered for the first Bell Island regatta. Two cup-shaped holes in the ground of about two feet deep and three feet wide marked the major impact. Some TV sets in the neighbouring community of Lance Cove exploded at the time of the blast. It was initially thought to be caused by ball lightning. Meteorologists stated that atmospheric conditions at the time were not conducive to lightning. The boom was heard 55 kilometers away in Cape Broyle.

The incident was investigated by scientists from Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. Some people speculated that they were investigating a secret weapons test and were military attachés. However, it is now believed they were investigating a "superbolt" – an unusually large bolt of lightning, lasting an unusually long time: about a thousandth of a second.

Today in the History of Bell Island: April was a month of several firsts for Bell Island during the mining years. In 1931, Miss Jean Lilly of St. John’s opened the first ladies’ hair-dressing business on Bell Island, located in Walter Walsh’s barbershop on Bennett Street.
By April of 1940, 50 Nfld. Constabulary, who had been on Bell Island guarding the iron mines against sabotage, were able to return to normal duties in St. John’s as enough Nfld. militia had been trained to take over for the duration of WWII.
On April 1, 1949, Newfoundland became part of Canada and mothers started receiving monthly cheques of $6.00 (equal to almost $80. today) for each child under 16 (as long as they stayed in school). This went a long way in helping feed and clothe large families, while dramatically changing attitudes about education and ensuring better futures for many. The news clipping below (from Mar. 14, 1962 Evening Telegram) shows Stanley & Myrtle Kitchen with 12 of their 13 children, all under age 16, just one of many large families who benefited from the Family Allowance, AKA, “Baby Bonus.” Mrs. Kitchen is quoted in the story as saying, "I used the Family Allowance to buy shoes and clothing for the children. With Stanley working, we got along alright."

[When this picture was taken, Mr. Kitchen had just been laid off along with 612 other miners following the closure of No. 4 Mine in January 1962. He was 44 and had been working in the mines for 25 years.]

February 3, 1940-March 12, 2025: Passed away peacefully in Cambridge, Ontario on Wednesday March 12, 2025 William John Sullivan. Predeceased by his loving wife of 49 years, Myrna on March 20th 2012. He was also predeceased by his cherished parents William and Catherine Sullivan of Bell Island.

Bill will forever be cherished by his sister Catherine (Bill Harding) who is left devastated by the loss of her brother "Billy". He was a brother she knew would always be there when she needed him- a virtue he passed down to his own sons.

Left with a lifetime of memories, profound grief but also laughter are his loving children, Paul and his children Melanie (Kale Trebinski) and Sarah Sullivan , Sean, Myrna (Jeff Warren) and their children Kimberly (Aaron Morning) and Allison Warren, Cathy (Dr John Edstrom) and their children Ethan and Avery Edstrom , Kelly (Rich Haskins) and their son Jacob Haskins . Dad was also great great grandfather to Noah, Tyler and Liam Morning. Bill will also be remembered fondly by his nephew Tony. He held a special place for Tony and his wife Sherry and their sons Tony (Candace) and Shane.

Bill played Senior Hockey in Newfoundland for the Conception Bay Cee Bees as their goalie. He was always proud to be a member of the Cee Bees that won the Herder Cup in 1959-60 Season. Bill worked at Newfoundland Light and Power for over 25 years retiring in 1993. During all that time he followed all of his kids- mostly pacing- to whatever sport they were playing at the time. That continued when they moved to Ontario after he retired as he and Myrna would hop in the car to watch Kelly play soccer all over Southern Ontario. He and Myrna would also follow their granddaughter Allison to her soccer games and their grandson Jacob to watch his baseball games. After Myrna passed away he would still bundle up to watch Jacob play hockey and cheer him on which he enjoyed immensely. One of Bill's best days was our 2023 Sullivan Family Reunion. It was held at one of his favourite places- Mohawk Racetrack. We were all there and shared laughs, love and memories with Dad.

Our family would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the staff and Sisters at Marian Residence Retirement Home, Dad's home for the past 10 years. We are grateful for the care they provided. We would also like to thank the staff at Hilltop Manor for caring for him in his last weeks.

In keeping with Bill's wishes cremation has taken place, and Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.

He was a dad , a grandfather, a great grandfather and a Bruins fan. Dad we will always miss you.

Happy St. Patrick's Day "weekend": The St. Patrick's Night concerts, which were to be so popular an annual feature in later years, were inaugurated in St. Joseph's Hall at The Front on March 17, 1913 with 300 people present. A one-act play, "The Wearin' O' the Green," was staged. Over the years, the day was celebrated with concerts, dances and, in the 1950s and 60s, a cavalcade through the streets of cars decorated with balloons, ribbons and Irish symbols. For Roman Catholics, the day was a school holiday and a Holy Day of Obligation that would start with Mass, where most people would wear something green, such as a green tie, ribbons, or a bunch of shamrocks. The photo below, courtesy of Tom Clarke, was taken in 1965 in front of Power's Supermarket, West Mines. Today in the History of Bell Island: On March 4, 1899, the Messrs. Butler of Topsail sold their mining claims on Bell Island to the Nova Scotia Steel and Coal Company (the Scotia Company), who had been leasing them from the Butlers up to that point. The Scotia Company then sold part of their holdings (the lower bed) to the Dominion Coal Company of Cape Breton, which became Dominion Iron & Steel Company (DISCO), known locally as the Dominion Company. Scotia and Dominion then each built steel plants in Cape Breton beginning a great steel industry there and setting off a building boom on Bell Island. Wabana iron ore was their sole source of blast furnace ore until the 1950s. The photo below is of the 3 Butler brothers: Jabez Sr., 1835-1924; John (standing), 1845-1920; and Esau, 1837-1926. Today in the History of Bell Island: Shrove Tuesday / Pancake Day is the feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Growing up in the mining days on Bell Island, this was a special food day. Unlike today when pancakes are a breakfast treat any day of the year, in those times, they were only served on this day, and were a main meal. The religious custom was to prepare pancakes to use up all the fattening ingredients (eggs, fat and milk) in the house before Lent so that people were ready to fast, as Jesus did during his 40 days in the desert. Objects that were said to predict future occupations were placed in the pancake batter. A coin symbolized future wealth, a pencil stub meant you would be a teacher, a holy medal meant you would join the clergy, a nail meant you would become a carpenter (or marry one), a button meant you would become a tailor. Soon becoming in charge of newspaper deliveries, sitting on the Resident Council, and running his beloved Tuck Shop until he "retired" last year due to poor health. Con was well known by all staff, visitors and residents as well as their family members and also the wonderful bus drivers who would take him to the mall for his weekly shopping trips. He was a die-hard Maple Leafs fan, and Toronto Blue Jays fan and was lucky enough to attend a game just last year with many thanks to two loving staff members from Age Care, Laura and Jo-An. In loving memory of Con, Age Care is dedicating the Tuck Shop to him in his name, "Con's Café", with a sign designed by his oldest grandchild, Max, and fabricated by John's friends and family at Brannon Steel. A huge heartfelt thank you to the staff at Age Care who loved Con so deeply and took such good care of him, as well as the kind bus drivers who made it possible for Con to enjoy his trips out so frequently. As per Con's request cremation has taken place and there will be no service. We miss you, dad, but we know you are up there dancing with mom again and talking hockey with Tim.

Paul's passion for hockey was unmatched, and despite his beloved Toronto Maple Leaf's playoff disappointments, he never wavered in his support. His frequent gatherings with the "grumpy old men crew" at Tim Hortons were filled with laughter, debates, and the kind of camaraderie that only true friends can share.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, from 7 p.m - 9 p.m. with prayers taking place at 8:30 p.m. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Ambrose RC Church on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, at 11 a.m. Paul will be laid to rest with his mother Veronica, and brother Tom at Mount View cemetery in the spring.

Happy Valentine's Day, Everyone!

As early as 100 years ago, Bell Islanders were celebrating Valentine's Day. Jean Lindsay, who was born in 1913, said that she and her friends made their own valentines from white paper doilies to send around to friends or give in school. There were none to buy in shops in those days.

Obituary for Walter Ryan, 1944 - February 6, 2025.
Picture

Anne G. Ryan Jr.:
For our relatives and my dad’s lifelong friends.
It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that I inform you of the passing of my dad Walter (Wally) Ryan, on Feb. 6th. He passed peacefully in his sleep at Sunnybrook Veterans Centre. We will all miss him more than words can express.
My dad was a proud veteran, a loving husband, father, grand grandfather, great-grandfather and Newfoundlander (Bell Island). Family was his pride and joy. He loved fishing, telling jokes and music, he especially loved NL music which he passed onto me and his grandchildren. My dad had his wit and kind heart to the very end. He would give you the shirt off his back and always the first to help someone in need. A true Bell Islander at heart. My dad was a supporter of the Wabana Boys and Girls club and love Radio Bell Island.
He is no longer suffering and is at peace.
Stand down soldier 1944-2025
Love you dad until we meet again
We would like to thank the staff @Sunnybrook Veterans Centre especially Mark and Simon.
There will be a celebration of life at a future date.

Obituary for Ruth (nee Skanes) Kunsch, January 10, 2025, age 83.
Picture

May 4, 1941-January 10, 2025. Our beloved Ruth passed away peacefully on the evening of January 10, 2025, at Parkwood Mennonite Home in Waterloo with her family by her side, after a brief illness and long struggle with Alzheimer's disease. Ruth is survived by her loving daughters Jocelyn (Peter) and Deborah (Kevin), and her bonus granddaughters Gwen, Ellie, and Annie. She also leaves behind a wonderful and caring extended family of sisters-in-law: Grace, Janet, and Margaret, as well as brother-in-law Herb, many nieces and nephews, and their children. She is predeceased by her husband of over 50 years, Bill Kunsch, her father Thomas Skanes, her mother Ethel Skanes, brothers Hubert Skanes and Max Skanes (Beth), and sisters Joyce Loveys (Roy), Joan Hunt (Ozwald), and Jean Skanes.

Ruth, the youngest of 6 children, was born on Bell Island, Newfoundland. A lover of learning and reading, she attended Memorial University in St. John's and then taught school at Grand Falls Academy, as well as back in St. John's. She continued to teach after moving to Ontario and settled in Kitchener, where she taught Grade 3 at Sheppard Public School (she loved that age of eager students).

She met her soulmate, Bill, through mutual friends and they married in 1967, beginning their lives together in Kitchener. They traveled and camped throughout Canada and built their dream home on Waldau Crescent just outside Kitchener, with lots of room for Bill's gardens and Ruth's love of trees. After Jocelyn and Deborah completed their foursome, she and Bill owned and operated The Donut Castle in Waterloo, where they served the uptown community for over 14 years. Never one to rest, Ruth finished her working years at Tim Horton's where her regular customers and co-workers loved her quick wit, easy smile, and caring nature.

Ruth's friends and family will remember her love of music, books (oh, the volumes of books!), trees, nature, a good game of cards, and shared moments of silliness and laughter - often being the instigator of shenanigans. They'll also remember her living out her unspoken philosophy of "leave things better than you find them". Her gentle way with children, animals, nature, family and friends, as well as strangers and the world in general, leaves a legacy of easy kindness that will never be forgotten.

Ruth's family would like to thank the amazing team at Parkwood Mennonite Home who cared for her during the 18 months she lived there. Special thanks to the nurses, PSWs, chaplains, care directors, and many others for their thoughtful and caring support of Ruth and her family during her final days there. Those days were peaceful and full of love, and she can now rest easy. Cremation has taken place. Visitation and service/celebration details will follow in Spring 2025.

In lieu of flowers, condolences for the family and donations to The Alzheimer's Society of Waterloo Wellington may be arranged through the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King Street S., Waterloo, 519-745-8445 or via www.erbgood.com.

Obituary for Dorothy (nee Blackmore) Furey, December 22, 2024, age 82.
Picture

1942 - 2024. Passed away peacefully at Freeport Palliative Care Unit, Kitchener, on Sunday, December 22, 2024, at the age of 82 years. Dorothy was born and raised in her favourite place in the world, Bell Island, Newfoundland, where her uncle gave her the lifelong nickname of Queen. Queen left NL at age 18 to join the Canadian Forces. She eventually settled in Galt, ON, where she raised her family, and joined many softball teams, and bowling leagues over the years. After she retired from her full-time employment at Butler Automotive, Queen decided to follow her passion of good food, good wine, and cooking, and attended the cooking program at Conestoga College. Her family became the lucky beneficiaries of her excellent skills.

Queen loved children and in her second career, she became the St. Aloysius Catholic Elementary School crossing guard standing at the corner of Cannaught St. and Traynor St. for 21 years, retiring in June 2024. She loved regaling her family with stories about the children she crossed every day, and especially loved crossing the children of children she crossed when she started years before. She was very touched that St. Aloysius had a book written about her when she retired, and it currently resides in the school library. Queen loved to travel. She has been to many places around the world, but her favourite trips were always when she went home to Newfoundland. Her last trip home was July 2024, and she was very happy to be there.
Queen had an enormous personality, and she seemed to know everyone. If you met her, you would never forget her. She was full of stories, love, and warmth. Her family, and friends will miss her terribly.

Loving mother of Shawn Furey (Karen), and Glenn Furey. Cherished grandmother of Kayleigh Bernard (Justin), Nicole Furey, Madeleine Furey, Abigail Furey, and great-grandmother of Carter Bernard, Emily Pittman, James Hagan, and Jacob Hagan. Beloved sister of Walter Blackmore (Cynthia), Laura Stortz (Orval), and Roslyn Power (Gerald). Predeceased by her parents, Rodger and Elizabeth Blackmore, sister, Shirley Batten, and brother, Don Blackmore. She will be fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and neighbours.

Special thank you to her cousin, Karen Good, for all her help over the last few months, and to the wonderful doctors, and nursing staff at Freeport Hospital. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life gathering will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society as expressions of sympathy. Messages and condolences may be left at www.tricitycremations.com or 519-772-1237
