LAWTON-MURPHY
J.T. Lawton (1860-1961) and his son, Louis (1888-1972), were well-known citizens of Bell Island throughout the mining years. The descendants of Ellen (nee Correy, c.1860-1919) and J.T. Lawton have included leaders in many fields, including pharmacy and other medical professions, clergy, wireless communications and education. You can read about some of them on this website by clicking on "L" in the drop-down menu under "People" in the main menu above.

Alphonsus (Alf) Thomas Lawton (1893-1984) Photos
Alf Lawton (1893-1984) was a wireless operator with Canadian Marconi Company and, later, the Department of Transport of the Canadian Government. During WWI, he was a wireless officer with the Royal Navy. He was born in Harbour Grace in 1893 to Ellen (Correy) (c.1860-1919) and John T. Lawton (1860-1961). He married Alma Hamilton Scott (1894-1973) at Port Dalhousie, ON, in June 1926. The photographs below are a small part of an album of 147 black & white photographs that include Bell Island, Corner Brook, Harbour Grace, Portugal Cove, Cape Race, Long Beach, Cape Ray, St. John's, Newfoundland in general, and the seal fishery. The range of years of the photographs is 1910-1956. Alf Lawton's grand-niece, Maureen (Murphy) White, donated the album (COLL-354) to Archives & Special Collections, MUN Library, in 2002.
Alf took the following photos during vacations when he was visiting his family on Bell Island. See descriptions beneath each photo.

Title of photo: "Building a Boat, July 1926." I believe these buildings are Dominion Company bunk houses for miners, perhaps at No. 4 Mine, West Mines. The woman leaning on the boat is probably Alma Scott. They married in June 1926, so this is likely their honeymoon trip. Photo #1.03.004, COLL-354.
