WABANA LITERARY INSTITUTE
The Wabana Literary Institute was launched in December 1926 with Grace Moore, B.A. as President; P.T. Murphy, Vice-President; John Cramm, Secretary; and Executive Members: Mrs. W.E. Cochram, R.R. Costigan and Percy Taylor. [This seems to have been a mixed-gender group as opposed to most community organizations of the time.] They held their first debate on January 12, 1927 in the United Church Hall. The subject was: "Resolved that music plays a more important part than literature in the shaping of human destiny." Literature was upheld by Rev. W.E. Cochram, Grace Moore and Dr. J.B. Lynch; Music by R.R. Costigan, Mrs. L.J. Lawton, and C.F. Taylor. The judges decided in favour of literature but the popular vote went to music.

In May, 1927, the Institute debated the subject: "Resolved that modern life induces decay in our physique." The negative team won by four votes.
