CHURCH OF ENGLAND ACADEMY/ST. AUGUSTINE'S
The first Anglican school at the new section of Bell Island known as "The Mines" or "Wabana" was opened on The Green in 1904.
From: Report of the Public Schools of Newfoundland under Church of England Boards, for year ended December 31, 1904:
On page xi, under "Superior Schools" (which seems to mean that they taught high school courses): "There were 20 of these in operation for the year [1904]...and since the year closed, one has been opened at Coley's Point and another on Bell Island... Payments to these have varied; the maximum paid has been $120, the minimum $100...They are the bright spots in our school work. They are presided over by our best teachers, and as a whole give eminent satisfaction. They are the raising ground for future Pupil Teachers and Teachers..."
On page 83, Inspection of Schools:
The District of Portugal Cove commences at the east end of Windsor Lake, and includes Portugal Cove Road, Portugal Cove, Bell Isle and Horse Cove. Board of Education: Rev. W. Smith, Chairman; S. Tucker, A. Squires, E. Harding, E. Somerton.
"For greater convenience, Bell Island has been separated from the District of Portugal Cove, and constituted a new District. At Wabana, a superior school was inaugurated in August last [1904], under Mr. W. Squire."

The photo above appeared on p. 35 of the 1958 souvenir booklet for the opening of St. Boniface RHS. The caption beneath the photo called it the "first Anglican Academy," however, the article then went on to say that the building that later became the Union Hall (see below) was the first school to be "officially called the Academy." The article stated that, "the school on the Green was opened in 1911 with Walter Squire as teacher, and he served until 1914." The report above, however, says that W. Squire "inaugurated" a superior school at Wabana in August 1904. Other teachers who went on to teach in the school on the Green were John Kennedy, Harry Gover and Nelson Shave. By 1958, the building pictured above was the home of Francis Gosine. In "A Brief History of St. Augustine's School" on p. 53 of the 1964 edition of the school yearbook, Focus, the house was said to be the residence of John Murphy.)
In 1918, the pupils moved to the building (above) on Bennett Street at the corner of Grammer Street. What was commonly called the Church of England (or Anglican) Academy was itself replaced in 1941. The building was sold to the Wabana Mine Workers Union, and was used as their Union Hall until the mines closed in 1966. Thereafter, it was used as a warehouse until it was demolished in July 2021. Photo from the 1958 Souvenir Booklet commemorating the opening of the St. Boniface Regional High School, p. 35.
In the spring of 1938, the Anglicans had a newly built school at West Mines, and their schools at Freshwater and Lance Cove were being enlarged.
In 1939, the Anglican Beach School [located in the area of present-day St. Boniface Cemetery on Cemetery Lane] was completely renovated.

The "new" Church of England Academy (above, also referred to as the Anglican Academy), which opened in September 1941. This photo was taken before additions were made. The one-storey addition, containing high school classrooms, school offices and a music room, and an attached auditorium, were under construction in the summer of 1952 and fully opened in September 1953. This building was located on Grammer Street where it meets 4th Street. It faced east, so that its back was to Grammer Street.
Fred Kirby was the first principal of the 1941 Academy. He was succeeded by Fred J. Newhook in 1944.

In the Foreword of the June 1953 Academician, Rev. W.G. Legge noted that the one-storey extension to the north side of the Academy was presently under construction. He also announced that "beginning next September, there will be no accommodation at West Mines for anybody above Grade 6, nor at the Beach School for anybody above Grade 8. Individual High School pupils have been coming from Lance Cove and Freshwater schools for seven or eight years...If our numbers continue to increase in all areas, and our winters continue to get milder, we may eventually bring all pupils above Grade 6 from everywhere to the Academy from where they would go on to the Regional High School for Grades 9, 10 and 11. The Government has shown its interest in this plan of centralization by increasing the building grant in this year's Budget on condition that part of it be spent to erect Regional High Schools."
At this time, a student with Grade XI could become a teacher by attending six weeks of classes at Memorial University in St. John's for what was referred to as "Summer School." Having completed Summer School, they would be offered teaching positions throughout Newfoundland, many of which were in one-room schools. Rev. Legge, in his Foreword, lamented the lack of qualified teachers for Bell Island's Anglican schools. He went on to say, "In the hope of getting a few more [qualified teachers] for next year, we have advertised that we shall be paying a bonus to all teachers having "First Grade" or higher." First Grade was obtained by spending one year at Memorial University. Rev. Legge noted that "Last year our Grade Eleven class won scholarships to the value of $1,500.00 and none of it was accepted." (ie. no students opted to attend Memorial University for Teacher Training.)

The photo above shows the original 1941 school building on the left, then the one-storey section in the middle, and the auditorium on the right. In operation from 1953-1963, it was one of the largest elementary schools of the Anglican Church in Newfoundland. The light-coloured building in the right of this photo is the rear of the Union Hall on Bennett Street at the corner of Grammer Street. That building was the Church of England Academy prior to September 1941. Photo from the 1964 edition of the school yearbook, Focus. The drawing below is of St. Boniface RHS from the cover of the souvenir booklet (which was actually the school yearbook for 1958) that was published to commemorate the opening of what was Bell Island's first school dedicated to teaching only the high school grades of 9 to 11. (The short-lived Roman Catholic Superior School that operated on Court House Hill from 1902-c.1913 seems to have taught all grades, as a photo of it shows pupils who look to be very young.)
When St. Boniface Regional High School opened in 1958, the Anglican Academy no longer taught all grades (which seems to have been what defined an "academy" in those days). On May 26, 1959, the former Academy was dedicated to St. Augustine of Canterbury and was renamed St. Augustine's Elementary School. After that, the one-storey section that had been added in 1952 was used for the junior high classrooms. This St. Augustine's school was totally destroyed by fire on the night of December 10, 1963. In 1963, there were over 600 students in 20 classrooms. There was a large auditorium-gymnasium, a music room and a specially-equipped remedial teaching room. There were 22 teachers, including a music teacher and reading specialist. Following the fire, the students of St. Augustine's were accommodated in six different buildings around Bell Island, where they saw out that school year and the first half of the next. Accommodations were made at the following locations:
Grade 1 was at the Vera Perlin School on Davidson Avenue (just north of Jackson Memorial School);
Grade 2 was at the Salvation Army School on Davidson Avenue;
Grades 3 & 4 were at the Orange Hall on Main Street;
Grades 5 & 6 were at the Vocational School on West Mines Road;
Grade 7 was at St. Boniface RHS in the auditorium;
Grade 8 was at the CLB Armoury on Main Street.
Information from the 1964 yearbook, Focus, p. 53.

The second St. Augustine's Anglican School (above) was a one-storey school erected on the original site and opened January 6, 1965. It was oriented so that the main entrance, seen on the left of the photo above, was facing west to Grammer Street. It did not last long, however, as on July 2, 1981 it also burned to the ground. The third version of St. Augustine's Anglican School (above) opened September 1983 at the present location on Davidson Avenue, just north of Jackson United Church. At that time, it was one of two elementary schools on Bell Island, the other being Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic School. When denominational education was abolished in Newfoundland & Labrador at the end of the 1997-98 school year, St. Boniface RHS closed and the former St. Michael's Roman Catholic High School became the Regional High School, serving all Bell Island Grades 9-Level III students. St. Augustine's became the Primary School serving Grades K-3, while Immaculate Conception became the Elementary School, serving Grades 4-8 for all Bell Island students. Immaculate Conception closed in 2004. St. Augustine's then became the only Elementary School, serving Grades K-6. St. Michael's then became a Grades 7-Level III school. This is a "List of Graduates" that was printed in the 1953 Academician, which was the title of the Anglican Academy's school yearbook at that time. Next to each name is what their occupation was in 1953. There was no introduction to say whether or not this list includes all former graduates of The Academy. Neither did the list state what years were recorded. However, information from the 1943 issue of the Academician (above), and from some graduates who are members of my Facebook Group, Historic Wabana Nfld, I was able to divide the list into years. I have also added information that was not in the original list. This added information is in brackets.
