The Bell Island Reporter was a mimeographed weekly publication that featured local news, sports, social news, letters to the editor, government notices, a teens' column and advertisements. The editorials dealt almost exclusively with local concerns, most notably the closing of the Bell Island iron ore mine in 1966, and sometimes had a sensationalist slant.
Variations of the title:
From 1958 to October 14, 1960, it was the Bell Island Reporter.
From October 21, 1960 to July 22, 1965, it was simply the Reporter.
From Aug. 5, 1965 to June 16, 1966, it was once again the Bell Island Reporter.
It was published at West Mines, Bell Island, from Nov. 15, 1958 to Nov. 22, 1959 and at St. John's from Nov. 29, 1959 to c.1967.
Variations in publishers:
From Jan. 1959 to Feb. 19, 1960, the publisher was Ron Pumphrey Enterprises.
From Feb. 26 to Oct. 14, 1960, it was Riv Burke and Tony Thomas.
From Oct. 21, 1960 to June 16, 1966, it was Riv Burke.
