The following items in quotation marks are from Addison Bown's "Newspaper History of Bell Island, 1894-1939," which was compiled from information he gleaned from the St. John's Daily News. The source information after each quote refers to the page information in Bown's newspaper history. Remarks in closed brackets are mine.
"In the last week of May, 1914, the Bell Island Co-operative Store started business opposite the surgery and residence of Dr. H.A. Giovannetti. (This was on Town Square at the NW corner of St. Pat's Lane.) Samuel Lodge, formerly of the Stores Department of DISCO, was manager. The store was an elaborate one, operating a meat and fish market, fresh vegetable department and a grocery and provision department." Source: Bown, 1914, p. 45.
The 1915 Directory for Bell Island lists Miss Clara Godden as manager of the Bell Island Co-operative Store. Michael Sweeney was listed as an employee of the store.
The 1919 Directory for Bell Island lists William Nelson Butler, Manager of Co-operative Stores, Hardware & Dry Goods. (In the 1915 Directory for Bell Island, William Nelson Butler was listed as a miner.) In 1919, "Miss Goden" was listed as Assistant Manager of Groceries with the Co-operative Stores, and Michael Sweeney was listed as butcher with Co-op Stores.
In the 1921 Census, Clara Godden's occupation was given as Assistant Manager, Bell Island Co-op.
In the Fall of 1926, negotiations were proceeding between a group of Bell Island citizens and the local management of the mining company with a view to taking over the lighting of stores and homes outside the mining company's property. "This service had been provided by the Bell Island Co-Operative Company which was then in liquidation." Source: Bown, 1926, p. 17.
