William James Fillier (1919-1942): Canadian Merchant Navy, S. S. Rose Castle, Fireman. He was born December 1919 to Martha (1892-19??) and William John Fillier (c.1876-1948?), a fisherman, in Harbour Grace, NL. Sometime before 1935, the family moved to Bell Island. It has been said that James joined the crew of the ill-fated ore carrier, S.S. Rose Castle, anchored in the Tickle off Bell Island, the evening prior to that ship being sunk in the early morning of November 2, 1942 by the German submarine, U-518. The 22-year-old was working as a fireman on the ship. His body was never recovered.
