In a December 30, 1926 article in the Daily News, Leo C. Murphy, correspondent for Bell Island, said the following about the Dominion Boat Club:
We wish the Wabana Literary Institute every success and, in doing so, are reminded of the fact that the first debate, to our knowledge held on Bell Island, was in the old Dominion Boat Club the year before the war [World War I, which started in 1914] when the subject discussed was: "Which is of greater importance to Newfoundland, the development of her fisheries or her mines?" It was a closely contested question, ably presented, and heard by a large number of spectators, many of whom contributed to the general discussion. The Dominion Boat Club is now a memory of the past...but thanks to the activity and interest of Messrs. A. McDonald, Daniel Steele, J.M. Greene, F.F. Jardine, J.T. Lawton, and a few others, the first debate held under proper auspices was a most interesting literary event.
