FRED & SADIE (nee LUDLOW) REES
Fred Rees (1915-2001) was the Resident Manager of the Wabana Mines from 1965 to 1966 when the mines ceased operation, and remained in the position for another year to wind down the business. Read Fred & Sadie Rees' biographies on the "People" page in section "R." The photos below were provided by two of their children: Brian and Anna-Clare.
The photo on the left above is from the Submarine Miner, V. 1, No. 1, June 1954, p. 2 on the occasion of his being promoted to Assistant General Superintendent of Mines at Wabana. The photo on the right is some years later, perhaps when he was Director of Personnel at Memorial University, where he worked from 1967-1981.
The photo (painting?) on the left above is of Fred Rees' father, Ananias Rees (1878-1965), who was Mechanical Superintendent with DOSCO. On the right above is Fred Rees as a child.
Above is Fred Rees and son Brian, c.1968.
In the photo above, Fred and Sadie are travelling to her childhood home in Fogo following their wedding in St. John's, July 1942. Below is a letter "Miss" Ludlow received from her students, "the pupils of Grades 6 & 7," as she was leaving the teaching profession "to get married."
A dream of Sadie's came true in the Spring of 1973 when she graduated with her degree in Special Education alongside her youngest daughter, Anna-Clare.
