MINERS & MINING SCENES

This page will feature images of miners and mining scenes at Wabana Iron-ore Mines from the 1890s through to the 1960s, and  gathered from many different sources.
NOTE: You can see more mining pictures on other "Photo Gallery" pages, and in the issues of the Submarine Miner, under "Publications" in the top menu.

"Mug-up on Surface": Surface miners having a mug-up in the early days of mining on Bell Island. The larger buildings in the right-hand background look like 2-storey bunk houses. This may be looking southwest from the Scotia No. 1 area, where mining was first started in 1895.

Miners waiting for manrake to take them underground, c.1950s. No. 3 Deckhead in background. Starting on the left and moving right, some of the men in this photograph are: Dennis Murphy, Dick Sutton, Tom Brazil, Chris Parsley, Norm Reynolds (halfway up the slope with power line behind his head but not looking directly at camera); John Parsons(?); Bill Ford; George Kearley(?); George Churchill(?); Bill Bursey; Frank Fitzgerald; Solomon Rees. The 4th man from left is holding a battery pack for his electric lamp, which is on the ground in front of him. Photo courtesy of The Rooms Provincial Archives.
