Benjamin Butler was born in Kelligrews, NL, in August 1878. He is not listed in the 1913 Directory for Bell Island, but may have commuting to the Island for work at that time. In the 1915 Directory for Bell Island, he is listed as a miner, so was a resident by then. In the 1919 Directory, and again in the 1921 Census, he is listed as a clerk at Scotia Pier. During this time, he lived at The Beach, Bell Island. It was reported in the Spring of 1935 that "Fred Snow moved to the Beach and took over the house previously occupied by Ben Butler." The Butler family had moved to the Front Road (now called Memorial Street), just east of the Beach Tramway. Meanwhile, by January 1925, Ben Butler's title at Scotia Pier had become "Shipping Clerk," which included the role of "Timekeeper"
